Ashot Ezrasovich Asratyan

Ashot Ezrasovich Asratyan (May 6, 1947, Moscow – July 29, 2025, Moscow) was a Soviet and Russian painter, as well as a physicist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. He was a member of the 'Archipelago' art group and held solo exhibitions in Russia. He was also known as a specialist in theoretical and experimental physics and participated in international scientific collaborations.

Biography
He was born in Moscow on May 6, 1947, into the family of corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences E. A. Asratyan and Zh. E. Asratyan. He graduated from the Physics Department of Moscow State University. He earned the degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1977) and Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (2001). Until 2018, he worked at the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP) in Moscow. He authored numerous scientific papers and led an international nuclear physics collaboration in the 1990s. Hirsch index: 13.

Since the mid-1970s, he was a graphic artist, working with gouache, pencil drawings, and since 1983, added collage techniques. He began with representational monochrome painting, then created a large series of non-representational works in mixed media. Influenced by his friend, artist Andrey Tal, he switched entirely to oil painting in 1987. Asratyan's art was closely associated with the tradition of postwar abstract expressionism.

As part of the 'Archipelago' group (Ashot Asratyan, Nikolai Chulkov, Andrey Tal), he held numerous exhibitions in Moscow, Tbilisi, Yerevan, Troitsk, and other cities (1976–1993):

1976 – 16th Exhibition of the Moscow Union of Graphic Artists, House of Arts Workers
1979–1980 – Group exhibition at the House of Culture, Troitsk, Moscow Region
1981 – Exhibition at the Moscow Literary Institute (with A. Tal)
1982 – Group exhibition at the House of Culture, Troitsk
1983 – Group exhibition at the House of Culture, Yerevan Physics Institute
1980s–1990s – Exhibitions at the art gallery on Nagornaya Street (Nagornaya Gallery), etc.

In 1995, he joined the International Federation of Artists UNESCO (IFA):

1995–1997 – Autumn and Spring exhibitions of the International Federation of Artists at 28 Malaya Gruzinskaya St., Moscow (currently closed)

In the 2000s–2010s, he held several major solo exhibitions: at the Moscow House of Scientists, at RUDN, in the exhibition hall of the high-rise building at Krasnye Vorota, and others. In 2019, Ashot Asratyan had a solo exhibition at the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art. He continued painting until his death on July 29, 2025. He was buried at Kuntsevo Cemetery in Moscow.
