Critic

The space, divided into parallel stripes, seems to flow beyond the bounds of the canvas. The tones are warm, fruity, and almost pastel. And into these yellow-pink parallel stripes, a fragile silhouette of a house is inscribed—a sense of calm and light nostalgia for the past, when the world was clear and simple, is evoked by Giya Gugushvili's painting 'Return.' This work marks a new stage in the artist's oeuvre. Motifs previously arbitrary and unmotivated now possess a distinct logic. Such is the tiny black-gray circle, shifted to the left, outlined with two strikingly blue semicircles in the painting 'Trace'—an image that becomes a sort of emotional hub of the painting, a trace of the real in the unreal. The concreteness, just as before devoid of declarativity, and the decorativeness of the color palette make Gugushvili's works easy to perceive. As before, the multilayered texture calls for a multilayered perception. However, now the lines, though still like delicate webs, lose their fragility. On the contrary, previously simply inscribed in the blurred, silvery-gray overall gamut, they become a sort of framework for the painting. Whereas the horizontal stratification, which was only hinted at and blurred by vertical, broken lines in Gugushvili's earlier works, now becomes a stylistic hallmark.
