Author about himself

Any viewer who sees the photographs and slides I present will decide they are dealing with an author working in the landscape genre. And they would be right. They will be able to judge what and how is depicted. But that's not the point. The essence of my work lies in where and how the photos are taken.

A subtle sense of beauty and perfection of Nature has always been familiar to me, since birth. The thirst to see as much as possible developed into a passion for travel. The realization that all these impressions remain only within myself inevitably created a need for self-expression. Turning to the art of photography was a logical step.

The work is carried out in complex and lengthy expeditions. In complete isolation from civilization, in hard-to-reach areas, where you can only rely on yourself. Where home is a thin tent and food is cooked over a campfire. Moving on foot, with a heavy load on the shoulders, or by water in a kayak or catamaran. Where the degree of comfort significantly depends on the weather. It is under such conditions that I gradually begin to feel like a primitive man, a part of Nature itself, and to see it not from the outside, but from within. That is where my photographs are born.

Placing a small part of my collection in a computerized art database, I hope that it will be seen by many viewers. In addition, I also expect feedback. It would be very interesting to communicate both with publishers and with people close in activity. I also consider possible joint projects with photographers, artists, travel enthusiasts, or professional travelers.

Main travels:
During my student years, I participated in seasonal geological expeditions: summers of 1982 and 1984 in the Eastern Sayan Mountains, summer of 1983 in Northern Kamchatka. From 1982 to 1992, I participated in numerous expeditions into deep vertical caves (about 20 expeditions and brief visits), with maximum descents up to 1000 meters. Caving areas: Crimea, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Primorye, Austrian Alps. Then a period of independent expeditions, where photography gradually became one of the main reasons.
1993, July. Mountain Altai. Solo, 180 kilometers on foot from Lake Teletskoye to Chuya Valley.
1994, June-July. Eastern Sayan. Along the Kazyr Valley to Gutaru, 250 kilometers on foot, three participants.
1995, June-July. Transbaikalia. Rafting on the Vitim River (700 km) and Chara River (300 km) by catamaran. Three participants.
1996, July-August. Putorana Plateau. Sailing the lake system of Western Putorana by catamaran, total route 500 km, five participants.
1997, June-August. Rafting the Lower Tunguska River. Solo, 2625 kilometers by kayak.
1998, July-August. Short trips in the Polar Urals and Western Altai.

Critic

Alone through the taiga wilderness, across the Putorana mountains, along the Vitim and Lower Tunguska rivers.
On foot, by kayak, but always with a camera, thirty-five-year-old Sergey Karpukhin travels.
The result of annual expeditions is constant exhibitions and thousands of unique subjects seen through the eyes of an artist.
