On Elephant "as counterparts. Standing, brown-gray mottled elephant with raised trunk. On its back, a wide, floral ornamented saddle with gold tassels, sitting Sultaness (or Persian woman) in magnificent, gem-set clothing of pink-colored robe over white, flowered breeches with a royal blue coat, along with an elaborate headdress, yellow shoes, and precious jewelry. In her right hand, she holds a scepter, and in her left, a censer. As a counterpart, a sitting Sultan in oriental, floral-patterned clothing with a purple-colored coat and noble turban, holding a scepter in his right hand. Polychrome painting with rich gold staffage. Possibly by Johann Joachim Kaendler and Peter Reinicke, mid-18th century. Model number 188. Unidentified restoration; crossed swords mark. Height 42-44 cm. 44 cm x 19 cm. In the archival records from between 1741 and 1749, "elephants with an adorned cover hanging over, bossed in throne" are mentioned in connection with J.J. Kaendler and P. Reinicke. In the 1740s of the 18th century, the Meissen manufactory thematically turned to the cultures of other continents and their countries. These new contents were implemented in porcelain by J.J. Kaendler in collaboration with P. Reinicke and formed in various variants. Both figure groups were also formed in modified variants with a rhinoceros and the addition of a Moorish figure. The sculpture of the elephant in the "court of the Great Mogul" by Johann Melchior Dinglinger, made between 1701 and 1708, served as a model for the animal design. See Ruckert, Cat. Bayer. National Museum, Fig. 1060 and 1061; Kunze-Kollensperger, Burda Collection, No. 41, Adams, Meissen Portraits, p. 167. A pair of large figure groups of "Sultan on elephant" and "Persian woman on elephant" probably modeled by J.J. Kaendler and P. Reinicke. Counterparts. Insignificantly restored. Crossed swords mark. Meissen. 19th/20th century.
