(1876 Scheibe/Thuringia - 1963 Coburg) Snake Dancer Bronze, patinated, silver-colored and black cold painting, sand-colored onyx base. Signed "Prof. Poertzel". Fully sculptural representation of a young dancer in a tight snake costume, standing on the right toe, arms and head stretched to the sky and the left foot almost raised to the head, with two snakes surrounding her on the plinth. This Art Deco statuette, created around 1925, was inspired by the appearances of the famous dancer Anny Gerzer (1904-1980), who danced for many years as a prima ballerina at the Bavarian State Opera - photographs from the time of approximately 1921-1924 show her in this pose ("Scherzo"). Poertzel, who worked as a sculptor in Coburg and Munich from 1900 onwards, became particularly known for his elegant Jugendstil and Art Deco figures in bronze and ivory. In 1904 and 1910, he participated in the world exhibitions in St. Louis and Brussels, and in 1913 he received the title of professor. Bronze H. approx. 21 cm; total height 27.5 cm. CITES certificate is available. See Bryan Catley's "Art Deco and Jugendstil Figures", Munich 1978, fig. p. 255; exhibition catalog "Beauty in Ivory", Erbach 1998, no. 69. Cold painted bronze and carved ivory figure of a female snake dancer on onyx base. Signed. Accompanied by a CITES certificate.
