In 1937, he became a master student under Kanoldt in Berlin. Fitz was a co-founder of the artist group ZEN 49 and opposed traditional representational art. He developed a painting style that focused on the exploration of artistic means, collaborating with painters such as Willi Baumeister, Fritz Winter, or Rupprecht Geiger.
