(1884 Rottluff - 1976 Berlin) "Crucified". Original title Woodcut/Velin, 1918. Catalogue raisonné Schapire H 204. Signed; lower left with the work number "182" indicated; Powerful, nuanced, deep black impression. The work is closely related to the "Christ" cycle in the portfolio "Schmidt-Rottluff. 9 Woodcuts", which was published in 1918 by Kurt Wolff Verlag and is a highlight in the artist's woodcut oeuvre. During his military service in World War I, Schmidt-Rottluff, who was a member of the artist group "Brücke" from 1905-1913, turned to religious themes and motifs from the New Testament. In the woodcut portfolio and also in the concurrently created print "Crucified", he achieved a tight, strong, angular, and flat formal simplification, where the triangular composition further intensified the expressiveness in the figure of Christ. Dimensions 37.9 x 25.8 cm. Framed. Woodcut on wove paper, 1918. Signed, inscribed with work no. "182".
