3 974 100.00

From the estate of Karl Lagerfeld, a white porcelain figurative lamp base. On a curved round base, fully sculpted, squatting young woman as a half-act with a sideways tilted head, both hands embracing the round lamp shaft. Either Gerhard Schliepstein, 1929. Above a round, structured, faceted lampshade with a white, floral-bordered textile covering. Sotheby's hanging label. Electrification worthy of renewal. Height of the base: 65 cm. Karl Lagerfeld was fascinated not only by pieces of French decorative arts from the 18th century, but he was also a passionate collector of design objects from the Memphis movement and Art Deco. In the years 2021 and 2022, Sotheby's auctioned off in three parts the estate of the fashion icon, including some Art Deco table lamps by Gerhard Schliepstein (1886-1963). Schliepstein was one of the most important sculptors in the first half of the 20th century and made a name for himself primarily with his outline-shaped, reduced female figurative sculptures. Schliepstein studied at the College of Fine Arts in Berlin; as a freelance artist, he designed his first porcelain figurines from 1911 onwards. From 1925 to 1937, he worked exclusively for Rosenthal, with the 62 created models for the manufactory being among the significant objects of modern expressionist sculpture in the field of porcelain. The squatting figure can also be found in a 1934-designed table centerpiece. See Niecol, Rosenthal, Vol. 3, p. 114ff., No. 3.1112, 3.1121; Thieme-Becker, Vol. XXI, p. 111. Provenance: From the estate of fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, auctioned by Sotheby's on December 5, 2021, in Munich, lot no. 176. Likely from the inventory of the Lagerfeld Villa in Hamburg. A large porcelain Art Deco table lamp with a figure of a squatting woman designed by G. Schliepstein, auctioned by Sotheby's on the 5th of December 2021 in Monaco. Sotheby's label. Selb. Rosenthal. 20th century.
