With plastic poppy decoration in the style of Fin-de-Siècle porcelain, changing in all directions from mint to turquoise green and light brown running glaze. Over a smooth round base with a circular bottom hole, the expanding corpus takes the form of a mace. Starting from the lower smooth wall, ascending, flat to strongly relief-plastically worked vegetable decoration of poppy stems and leaf structures, transitioning into free-standing leaves and large poppy flowers. On the side, emerging from a lowered, hood-shaped inverted calyx leaf, the head of a curious observing child with fully sculpted shoulder, right arm, and hands, firmly grasping the foliage. Model design by Richard Edmund Floricke (active 1892-1942 at KPM). Decor design probably by Carl-Hans Bernewitz or Franz Metzner. Model number 6244 (model book entry September 1899, referring to "fish" (probably mistakenly for model number 6224 "vase with fantasy fish"). Measurement designation Q XIII. One stem repaired; blurred scepter mark. Height 73 cm. In the wake of the technical innovations of the Chemical-Technical Experimental Institute of KPM Berlin, founded in 1882, Director Albert Klein succeeded in developing a mass similar to frit porcelain that allowed for free modeling of the decoration without the use of molds. Thus, at the end of the 19th century, only a few characteristic unique pieces emerged, covered with Segers' art glazes, undergoing a veritable metamorphosis between form and decoration. In 1900, KPM Berlin presented at the Paris World Exhibition the Iris Vase or the flower vessel with free-standing calla lily decoration, two comparable, albeit smaller, sculptural vessels. A vase by Carl Bernewitz with poppies and two female figures is registered under model number 6055 (March 1899). In 1921, the model forms of the vases were destroyed. According to inquiries at the KPM archive, the offered version is a previously unknown design. We thank the manufacturer's archive of KPM for their friendly information.
