Ahlden/Aller - 9-09-2023
Donated by Emperor Wilhelm II, the victor in the competitive fencing of the Guard Cavalry Officers in Berlin in 1905, this silver cup is a splendid example of German craftsmanship. The cup is trumpet-shaped, with multiple profiles and a transitioning shaft that is short and tongue-shaped, with channeling. The high, expanding smooth cup is adorned at the base with a lavish relief sculpted lance and acanthus leaf wreath. The front of the cup is engraved with an inscription and date. On either side, there are two ascending, ribbed handles, embellished with relief lance leaf motifs. The cup weighs 1316 grams and measures 31 cm in height. It bears the standard mark 800, as well as the maker's mark and dealer's mark for Koch & Bergfeld in Bremen. This exquisite piece of art has a provenance from an old German noble possession.
