Ahlden/Aller - 1-12-2023
(1945 Bleckede - 2007 Düsseldorf) "Alter Ego" (The Other I). Original title Bronze, brown patinated, partially polished, 1995. Signed, dated, numbered 330/980; foundry stamp, cast by ARA Kunst, Dr. Fritz Albrecht, Altrandsberg. Example from a special edition in a 10-copy edition with brown patination (within the 980-numbered series) as an undivided bronze sculpture, cast 2007. On the plinth, the inscription "Der Bildhauer im Maler ist sein bester Feind" (The sculptor in the painter is his best enemy). Fully sculpted, expressive representation of a seated monkey, holding an oversized brush and contemplating, with the surface in lively relief-textured through the raw, preserved clay lumps of the model. For ImmenDorff, who shaped German art since the 1970s, the monkey was the essence or mirror image of the painter, his "Alter Ego" as it were. The "painter monkey" thus became a recurring motif in ImmenDorff's entire oeuvre. In a large sculpture from 2002, he even depicted himself as a painter monkey in the hands of Joseph Beuys, as he studied with him at the Düsseldorf Academy in the 1960s. In 1989, he received a professorship at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, and from 1996, he was a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Approximately 38 cm x 38 cm x 26 cm. In the general edition, the bronze was divided in the middle lengthwise as a double sculpture.
