Stoneware. Thick-walled cylindrical shape with a thickened lip rim, two small loops and visible throwing lines. Colorless glaze, with two long downward-drawn tongues from the rim over the loops in dark brown or white-gray, with individual descending dark brown drips. Signed on the original wooden Tomobako box; vase height 19.5 cm. The Japanese ceramicist Shoji Hamada (1894-1978) was appointed a Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuhô) in 1955 and became one of the most internationally influential potters of the 20th century through his friendship and collaboration with his English colleague Bernard Leach.
