Patination

A technique for artificially aging the surface of silver items

Patination

Patination is a special technique for treating the surface of metal or ceramic objects, used to create the effect of aged texture and color. This treatment gives the item a unique charm and historical depth without lengthy natural aging. It is often applied to silver and bronze, imitating natural corrosion and oxidation without compromising strength. In art, patina can serve both as protection and as a decorative element. For example, silver figurines with patina look more expensive and vintage. Fun fact: in the 17th century, some craftsmen patinated items so skillfully that they passed them off as ancient antique relics!

Patination can be natural (from time and environment) or artificial, when the artist controls the shade and structure. The technique allows highlighting details, deepening shadows, and enlivening surfaces.
