Collection of 71 Meissen Gardeners: Rococo and Nature

Meissen

Description

On a Rococo-style base sit or stand young men and women dressed in brightly patterned Rococo attire, partially adorned with lace and gold trim, portraying gardeners, wine makers, and shepherds. They are accompanied by various attributes: baskets of flowers and grapes, shepherd's crooks, wine barrels, and a variety of tools, including a bagpipe or flute, as well as animals such as sheep and birds. The polychrome painting is enhanced with gold accents. The works were possibly created by Johann Joachim Kändler and Michel Victor Acier, around 1740 or 1778/79. Some items are partially unknown or restored; marked with crossed swords. Heights range from 10 cm to 14 cm. "Love of nature" is reflected in the landscaped gardens and greenhouses of elaborately designed representative castles of European princely palaces of the 18th century. These palaces were also involved in winemaking and cultivated fruit plantations. This deep interest is reflected in the gardener, shepherd, and winemaker figures created by Meissen modeler Johann Joachim Kändler (1706-1775) and his colleague Michel Victor Acier (1736-1799) in various series of gardener children. See the catalog of the Meissen State Porcelain Manufactory, Figures I, Gardener Children. Extensive collection of 71 gardener figures modeled by J. J. Kändler and M. V. Acier. Some minor chips/restorations. Marked with crossed swords. Meissen. 19th and 20th century.
