"Evening Mood" Artist: William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905), National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana. Bouguereau was a French academic painter, a notable representative of French academicism in the second half of the 19th century. Characteristics of Bouguereau's work: technically flawless realistic depiction and sentimental interpretation of the subject. Bouguereau favored contemporary figurative interpretations of mythological subjects, emphasizing the depiction of the human (and often nude) body. He regularly exhibited at the Salons and for some time was regarded as the most famous painter in France, as well as in England and the USA. As a supporter of academicism, he opposed new artistic trends, including Impressionism, and often hindered the exhibition of works in the newest styles within the Salon. As a follower of the Pre-Raphaelites, Bouguereau decorated several Parisian churches with religious compositions in this style. Since 1875, the artist taught at the Académie Julian.
