"Evening Mood"
Artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) National Museum of Art, Havana.
French painter and a prominent representative of French academicism in the second half of the 19th century.

The features of William Bouguereau's work include technically flawless realism in his representations and a sentimental interpretation of themes. Bouguereau preferred modern figurative portrayals of mythological subjects, emphasizing the depiction of the human (often nude) body. He regularly exhibited at the Salons and, for a time, was regarded as the most famous master of the brush in all of France, as well as in England and the USA. A supporter of academicism, he rejected new artistic movements, including Impressionism, and regularly obstructed the display of works from the latest styles at the Salon. As a follower of the Pre-Raphaelites, Bouguereau adorned several Parisian churches with religious compositions in this style. From 1875, he taught at the Académie Julian.
