Smirnov Igor

Description

Igor Smirnov (1952) has been involved in the movement of nonconformist or 'underground' art in Russia since the early 1980s. Igor Smirnov's works were featured at some of the most popular 'underground' exhibitions in Saint Petersburg, Moscow, and Germany from 1982 to 1988. Smirnov's artworks attracted the attention of John Whitehead, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, during his visit to Moscow in December 1987 as part of the preparations for the meeting between President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. At Mr. Whitehead's personal request to the USSR's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Shevardnadze, the Soviet authorities allowed Igor Smirnov to immigrate to the United States. The artist happily settled in California, enjoying the advantages and inspiration provided by his new environment.
