He was taught by seascape painter Sørensen and took courses at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He began exhibiting his works in 1863, and in 1864, his painting “Begstrup Cove, Hels” was acquired by the royal museum in Copenhagen. He served in the German-Danish War in 1864 before returning and painting "Danish Men-of-War Leaving the Sound," earning him the Neuhausen Prize. He visited the Netherlands, Paris, Italy, Vienna, Dresden, and Berlin on a two-year travel scholarship. His last large seascapes include "Lifeboat Approaching a Foundering Vessel" (1871), "Søren Kanne" (1877), and "Vessels Towed from Harbour" (1887).
