rectangular in shape, it is marked by two orders of decoration: the inner part is delimited by meticulously carved pilasters in the form of a caryatid portrayed in profile and has candelabra alternating with medallions with cherubs depicting allegory of the seasons; at the corners profiles of four Italian poets who have treated love (Dante Alighieri, Ludovico Ariosto, Francesco Petrarca and Torquato Tasso). The lower frame is characterized by three views of Rome (the Pantheon, St. Peter's Square and the Colosseum). The attribution to Giovanni Battista Gatti is due to the high quality of the inlays that characterize this small frame, whose technical perfection borders on virtuosity. In fact, he is known for the excellence of his Renaissance-inspired decorations. After his stay in Florence at Luigi Falcini's workshop, Il Gatti returns to Faenza, his hometown, arousing the interest of Cardinal Luigi Amat who, recalled to Rome to hold the position of Prefect, invites him to follow him to the capital where he will remain until end of his days. In Rome, his activity collects very wide successes, but his notoriety extends on an international scale due to his participation in the most important universal exhibitions in the major European capitals (Paris, London, Dublin and Vienna in the years from 1855 to 1878) and in the other continents. His extraordinary works are partly preserved in Faenza, in the Fondo della Pinacoteca and in the National Museum of the Neoclassical Age in Palazzo Milzetti and abroad in prestigious museums such as the Victoria and Albert in London, the Nelson-Atkins in Kansas City, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. His Queen Victoria wedding memorial table, commissioned by the Queen herself, is kept in Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, once a royal residence and now part of the Royal Collection Trust.
