Archaization
A tendency to stylize in the manner of earlier eras
Archaization is a deliberate recourse to the forms, style, and techniques of past eras in art. This approach is favored by artists, sculptors, porcelain or silver craftsmen to emphasize respect for history, evoke nostalgia, or achieve a particular visual effect. Archaization can manifest in the choice of color palette, compositions, and details: for example, when a modern porcelain vase is decorated with painting imitating antique ceramics, or a jeweler creates a silver goblet with Gothic elements.
Interestingly, viewers sometimes cannot distinguish stylization from genuine antiquity, and such works have often ended up in famous collections, mistaken for authentic artifacts! Archaization is not a copy, but a creative quotation of the past, giving new meaning to classical imagery.
