Battle Genre
Genre of fine art devoted to military scenes

Battle genre — a genre combining small-scale painting and depiction of heroic battles. On tiny plates of porcelain, metal, or paper, the artist conveys large-scale battles, uniform details, facial expressions, and weapons with jeweler's precision. In the 18th–19th centuries, battle miniatures adorned snuffboxes, cigarette cases, panels of expensive cabinets, and collector's albums.
A particular challenge is creating a composition where on a small space a captivating subject remains readable and moving figures distinguishable. Sometimes artists resorted to curiosities: one master mistakenly depicted a shield in a horse's hands, and a pirate from a miniature was later kept as a family talisman. Today, battle miniatures are valued by collectors for their rare combination of history and fineness of execution.
