Batik

Fabric painting technique using resist agents

Batik

Batik is a decorative art originating in Indonesia. Its essence lies in the gradual application of wax or another resist agent to fabric, subsequent dyeing, and then removal of the protective layer. This yields complex, multi-layered patterns. There are cold and hot batik: hot batik employs molten wax, while cold batik uses special resist pastes.

This technique is valued for the uniqueness of the final design, as it is impossible to reproduce two identical pieces. In the 20th century, batik gained popularity among artists and fashion designers for creating exclusive scarves, curtains, garments, and panels that blend artistic painting with applied art. There are even competitions for the most curious batik!

Collectors love batik for its authorial touch and the unpredictability of shape and color in each piece.
