Arch
Architectural and decorative element

Arch — an element of architecture and decorative arts, used since ancient times to create openings, support structures, and decorate. Arches can be semicircular, pointed (Gothic), or keel-shaped (Oriental styles). They were especially valued in medieval markets: sometimes Venetian arches were sold in parts as souvenirs!
In porcelain items, arched forms give elegance to the object, and carved arch motifs are found on silver. The style of the arch becomes a recognizable marker of an era: from massive Roman to elegant modernist solutions of the 20th century. Ancient Roman arches are reflected even in the design of vases or porcelain clock cases. The arch is not only a functional element, but also an eternal symbol of fortification and transition, found in all directions of art.
