Boiserie

A type of decorative wood carving used for interior decoration

Boiserie

Boiserie is a technique of artistic carving and molding in wood, richly adorning walls and panels in European interiors of the 18th–19th centuries. It was especially popular in France during the reign of Louis XV and the Assembly. Boiserie panels were covered with gilding or painted in light shades, often accompanied by paintings or mirrors. Boiserie gave a luxurious and cohesive look to halls and drawing rooms: motifs of shells, garlands, foliage.

Today, original French boiseries are highly valued by collectors and restoration specialists, preserving the aura of comfort and elegance of a bygone era — sometimes in modern homes, fake boiseries are created to stylize the interior as antique or cinematic.
