Niello

Niello is an ancient technique that gives objects expressiveness and contrast. A special sulfurous mixture is applied to the metal, which reacts with the silver surface and creates a dark tone in the recesses, highlighting the relief and details. This treatment makes items more embossed and visually "voluminous."
This technique was especially valued in Russian and Eastern decorative art. Craftsmen from Veliky Ustyug and Yaroslavl were famous for their cups, crosses, and covers with deep niello. Interestingly, niello is not only decoration but also protects the metal from tarnishing.
Niello patterns look most effective against polished silver — the contrast of shine and darkness creates a refined play of light. Today, the technique continues to live in jewelry workshops, where it is combined with enamel and engraving.
