Scaled Glaze

Scaled glaze is a special glazing technique in ceramics that coats the surface of an object with distinctive scales. These are created during thermal processing, when the glaze cracks under the influence of temperature and chemical reactions, forming a structure resembling fish scales or feathers. This effect is achieved by using special glaze compositions and controlled firing conditions.

This technique adds volume and depth to pieces, playing with light on the surface, as if bringing the object to life. Scaled glaze is highly valued in decorative art, especially in Eastern and contemporary ceramics.

Interestingly, one artisan accidentally discovered this effect by leaving a piece in the kiln for an extended period.
