Estampage

A technique for obtaining impressions in decorative and applied arts

Estampage

Estampage is an interesting technique that allows obtaining an imprint of a bas-relief or relief image (coins, medals, cameos) on damp paper or foil. Such an impression helps to preserve and study details of the original. Traditionally, estampages are used in numismatics, archaeology, and even for recording hallmarks on antique silver items.

In the 19th century, collectors loved to collect estampages of rare coins for their catalogs. Quick production and accuracy of reproduction make estampage indispensable for restorers and researchers. A subtle, and sometimes amusing, fact: sometimes through estampage were discovered counterfeit coins or secret marks of master jewelers hidden in the relief.
