Silver and metal

Filigree (Scan)

Fine technique of openwork wire pattern in artistic silver

Filigree (Scan)

Filigree (Scan) is an exquisite technique of jewelry art where the finest metal threads are woven into elegant patterns. Special charm arises when light passes through their transparent weaving, creating a play of highlights.

Known since ancient times — the first examples are found in Egypt and Mesopotamia, and in European silver it flourished in the 16th–18th centuries. Craftsmen achieved the effect of weightlessness by joining threads with soldering and forming ornaments of curls, lace, and plant forms.

In Russia, the technique gained popularity in the ancient crafts of Veliky Ustyug and Kostroma — it was preserved in jewelry, icon covers, and small household items. Today filigree is used not only by jewelers but also by designers of contemporary decorative art, combining traditions and minimalism.

The main charm of filigree is the combination of metal precision and lace lightness.
