Regency Silver

Distinctive style of early 19th-century English silver

Regency Silver

The Regency era (1811–1820) was a time of refined changes in English silver. A sophisticated style emerged: strict lines and minimalism gave way to luxurious ornamentation. Regency silver is characterized by Greek and Egyptian motifs: palmettes, candelabra, griffins. The bright metal was emphasized by the chiaroscuro of engraving.

Personal commissions and family crests became popular, as the era was a realm of elegant dinner services, flatware, and candelabra. Collectors still admire the finest filigree work, and monograms and secret hallmarks often lead to discoveries about the owners. Among the curiosities are cuirasses commissioned for celebrations, later transformed into 'armored' teapots—the art of surprise manifested in full brilliance!
