Sculptural Group
Composition of Several Figures in Sculpture

Sculptural group is a unified compositional ensemble of two or more figures interacting with each other. Such groups have been found in monumental and decorative sculpture since ancient times: for example, "Laocoön and His Sons." In porcelain, sculptural groups often depict scenes from life, myths, or gallant subjects.
It is important that the characters are connected by movement, glances, even gestures — this creates a sense of unified action. Entire artistic workshops worked on creating such compositions. Sometimes customers asked to add a funny detail: a secret observer or an unexpected animal. Such insertions enlivened the strict academic form and made the piece unique, bringing a smile to the viewer.
