Frederick II the Great (German: Friedrich II der Große) was born on January 24, 1712 in Berlin and died on August 17, 1786 in Sanssouci, Potsdam. King of Prussia (1740–1786). Nicknamed “Old Fritz.”

One of his notable reforms was the abolition of censorship. He made it clear to his ministers that "Berlin newspaper writers should be granted unlimited freedom to write about all capital news without prior censorship." Frederick insisted that "interesting newspapers should not be impeded." Deceased censors were generally not replaced—these positions remained vacant during his reign. Under him, the legal justification for freedom of the press first became possible on German soil. Frederick was a patron of the sciences and arts. In 1742, he established the Royal Opera, for which architect Knobelsdorff constructed a building.

After the Gotzkowsky factory passed to Frederick II, it became the Royal Porcelain Manufactory, and its trademark from the outset was the royal scepter. Portraits in medallions adorning Berlin Empire-style tableware and cups were mainly the works of sculptor Leonard Posch. As a reaction to cold classicism, the Biedermeier style arose, suited to the bourgeois love of comfort and coziness. Berlin factory products in this style enjoyed wide popularity—these were mass-produced items, but with a distinctive charm characteristic of the era.
