Extensive collection of 71 Meissen gardener figures.

Meissen

Description

On a rocaille-relief pedestal, there are sitting or standing girls and boys as gardeners, winemakers, and shepherds, dressed in rococo clothing with colorful patterns and partially adorned with gold-trimmed lace. They are accompanied by various attributes such as filled flower and grape baskets, shepherd's staff, wine barrel, and various tools, as well as different instruments like bagpipes or flute, and accompanied by various animals, including sheep and birds. The polychrome painting is embellished with gold trim. Possibly by Johann Joachim Kaendler and Michel Victor Acier, around 1740 or 1778/79. Partly unknown or restored; crossed swords mark. Height ranges from 10 cm to 14 cm. The "love of nature" is reflected in the landscape gardens and orangery of the generously designed, representative castle complexes of European princely courts of the 18th century. The courts also cultivated viticulture and managed fruit plantations. This profound interest is reflected in the figures of gardeners, shepherds, and winemakers designed by the Meissen modeler Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775) and his collaborator Michel Victor Acier (1736-1799) in various series of gardener children. See catalog of the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen, Figures I, Gardener Children. An extensive collection of 71 gardener's figures modeled by J. J. Kaendler and M. V. Acier. Partly minor chipped/insignificantly restored. Crossed swords mark. Meissen. 19th and 20th century.
