Grotesque

Grotesque

Grotesque is a style in art that combines elements of reality and absurdity. It can manifest in various forms: from painting and sculpture to theater and literature. The word "grotesque" comes from the Italian "grottesca," meaning "cave," since the first images in this style were found in ancient Roman caves.

This style is characterized by monstrous characters, deformed forms, and surreal scenes that can evoke both laughter and disgust. Grotesque is often used to convey social criticism, provocation, or a surreal atmosphere. For example, in the paintings of Francisco Goya, one can see elements of the grotesque that reflect the anxiety and absurdity of human existence.

Fun facts: at exhibitions of artworks in the grotesque style, it is not uncommon to stumble upon pieces that provoke a smile, although deep beneath their veneer lies serious satire on society.
