A genre depicting sea views, ships, and coastal scenes

Marina

Marina — a term for the genre of painting dedicated to the sea: waves, ships, ports, and coastal landscapes. This genre originated in Holland in the 17th century, when maritime trade flourished and scenes of naval battles, storms, or calm bays became favorites. Marinas were painted by Aivazovsky, Vernet, Turner. The paintings often impress with the play of light on water, the drama of storms, or romantic stillness.

Artists learned to convincingly convey the movement of waves, played with the color palette to show the depth of the sea or the transparency of the air. History knows unusual cases: Aivazovsky, for example, rarely painted from life — the sea, in his words, lived in his head, and he created his best storms from memory! Marina is an ideal genre to feel the dynamics of nature and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the sea even in the urban bustle.
