Marquetry
Decorative wood inlay technique

Marquetry is the art of creating ornaments and images using thin veneers of different wood species. This technique adorned furniture in aristocratic homes of the 18th–19th centuries. The secret of the craft lies in the filigree selection of wood by color and texture. In the famous workshop of André-Charles Boulle, marquetry was complemented with metal, resulting in unique "Boulle" pieces.
Marquetry often drew inspiration from flora and fauna, geometry, and portraits were also found.
Interestingly, at the French court, marquetry was valued not only for its complexity but also for the secret "hiding places" that craftsmen skillfully concealed in tabletops or commodes.
This technique has long been a symbol of luxury and artistic refinement, and today it is returning to interior fashion.
