Silver and metal

Mokume-gane

Mokume-gane

Mokume-gane is a Japanese decorative forging technique where layers of different metals are combined, creating patterns reminiscent of wood grain texture. The name literally translates as "metal resembling wood". Copper, silver, gold, and other alloys are used, forged together into a solid sheet. Then it is ground and polished to reveal beautiful patterns.

The technique originated in the 16th century among master swordsmiths to decorate tsuba and scabbards. Today, Mokume-gane is applied in jewelry art and decorative metalworking. Its feature: each pattern is unique and unrepeatable.

Interestingly, initially this technique had a purely utilitarian purpose, but over time it turned into a true art form.
