Monochrome Painting
The technique of using a single color in different shades

Monochrome painting is a special technique where the artist uses only one color and its shades, varying lightness and saturation to the maximum. This approach sharpens attention to composition, texture, and details — since the viewer is not distracted by a complex color palette. It is especially common in graphic art and early modernism. For example, Picasso's famous "blue" paintings or Kazimir Malevich's austere monochromes.
Interestingly, one collector once brought a monochrome work to an auction, and experts argued whether it was art or a neatly painted board!
Monochrome helps to look at familiar forms in a new way and teaches one to perceive subtle differences in shades.
