Relief on Porcelain
A special technique for decorating porcelain items

Relief is a method of artistic finishing of porcelain, in which an image or ornament protrudes above the surface of the item. Such decorations are formed by hand or with the help of molds at the modeling stage, and then glazed and fired. Relief patterns can be geometric, floral, or narrative, giving items additional expressiveness and tactile appeal.
Deep reliefs in European porcelain of the 18th–19th centuries were especially valued — craftsmen created entire "sculptures" on cups and vases, sometimes with humorous scenes or allegories. Relief was also a way to distinguish an item among mass-produced factory goods. In modern culture, collectors highly value the complexity and individuality of hand-crafted relief, and identifying its technique often helps accurately date porcelain.
