Description

Gogol
Series: "Familiar Faces"... Gogolian Types by Boklevsky on Decorative Porcelain.
Illustrating the works of Gogol became the lifelong endeavor of the outstanding Russian artist-illustrator Pyotr Mikhailovich Boklevsky (1816–1897).
In 1858, the first album of illustrations for "The Government Inspector" was published, followed in 1863 by "Bureaucratic Catechism"—a new version of drawings for the same comedy.
Boklevsky's greatest love among Gogol's works was "Dead Souls." This was the artist’s bedside book.
In 1875, the "Album of Gogolian Types" was released, consisting of 23 watercolor portraits reproduced using woodblock printing. The grotesque characteristics of literary heroes, the accuracy of psychological portrait representations, and their correspondence to Gogolian descriptions brought the author great popularity. This was reflected in numerous reprints of the album and its reproduction in magazines and postcards, as well as leading to the use of his character types in creating series of decorative porcelain plates and dishes. The graphic language of portrait images was adapted for decorating porcelain.
By the 50th anniversary of N.V. Gogol's death (1902) and the 100th anniversary of his birth (1909), portraits of his characters created by Boklevsky were reproduced on decorative plates of various diameters, produced at the Gardner porcelain factory.
The popularity of the series was extraordinarily high. Today it is difficult for us to imagine that such "unglamorous" faces decorated interiors at the turn of the century.
It is likely that decorative plates featuring "Dead Souls" were produced not only at the Gardner factory but also in smaller workshops, considering the variety of examples in terms of execution, from highly artistic pieces to handcrafted items.
Portrait of landowner Pyotr Petrovich Petukhov (referred to on the back of the plate as "Petukhov"), a character from the second volume of the poem "Dead Souls."
