Decal (Decalcomania)

A technique for creating images by transferring a design

Decal (Decalcomania)

Transfer is a technique for decorating porcelain in which the image is first printed on special paper and then transferred onto the surface of the object. This method became widespread in the 19th century, making ornaments more complex and mass production more accessible. A distinguishing feature: the lines of the design are sharp, without traces of a hand brush.

Early transfers were sometimes hand-finished for added uniqueness.

Interesting fact: Collectors value early transfer pieces where remarkable curiosities occur—for example, images applied 'upside down' or with overlapping, which add special appeal to such items.

For teapots, plates, and vases, this method was often combined with painting, creating complex, multi-layered decors.
