Scratching

Scratching is a method of creating artistic images by scraping off the upper layers of material with a tool. This technique is used both in painting and in graphics, allowing artists to reveal lower, usually contrasting colors, which creates an effect of multi-layering and depth. In scratching, the main element is texture.
An artist can use various tools, such as knives, spatulas, or even fingers, to create different reliefs.
Interestingly, this technique originated in the early 20th century and was popularized by expressionist artists.
Some artists, such as Henri Matisse, used scratching to create unique works that allowed the viewer to see not only color but also form. In addition, scratching is often used in children's artistic practice, as it allows not only to experiment but also develops motor skills and artistic perception in children.
