Imitation Marble
Decorative Technique in Painting and on Objects

Imitation marble is a decorative technique that creates the illusion of expensive stone. This technique has appeared in wall decoration, porcelain painting, and even on silver items. Artists used brushes, sponges, and special combs to convey the fineness of veins, the depth of color, and the shine of natural marble surfaces. In the 18th–19th centuries, marbling porcelain was fashionable—items looked much more expensive, and sometimes craftsmen imitated the texture so skillfully that buyers told stories of trying to scratch the “stone,” convinced it was real marble.
For artists, the ability to imitate materials is a mark of skill. Using such techniques allows one to give an interior or an object a special luxury even without the expense of costly materials.
