Classicism
An art style turned to the ideals of antiquity and harmony

Classicism is an artistic movement of the 17th–19th centuries that originated in France and spread throughout Europe. Its foundation is strict symmetry, ideal proportions, and imitation of the forms of art of Ancient Greece and Rome. In painting and sculpture, clear lines, calm poses, grandeur, and clarity of composition prevail. Classicism opposes the emotionality of Baroque, valuing reason and 'pure' beauty.
Architectural monuments of the era are often adorned with colonnades and pediments.
Interestingly, in France artists fiercely debated whose antiquity to consider correct – Greek or Roman.
It is thanks to Classicism that we have such strict, monumental palaces and triumphal arches, perfectly fitting into the grand squares of cities.
