Plein Air
Painting Outdoors

Plein air is a technique and movement in painting where the artist works directly "en plein air," that is, outdoors. The goal of pleinairism is to capture natural light, atmosphere, and the fleeting mood of nature or an urban landscape. This leads to a free, spontaneous manner of painting where the play of light and shadow is important, and colors are often conveyed as vividly and naturally as possible.
Interestingly, many Impressionists were pioneers of pleinairism, but not all pleinairists fell under Impressionism.
By working outside the studio, the artist catches the gloss of nature, sometimes even with unexpected results—changing weather, rapidly altering light, and natural sounds. This makes each painting unique and alive. Pleinairism opened new possibilities in conveying a sense of freedom and moment, which influenced many styles and movements in 20th-century art and continues to inspire artists to this day.
