Polychromy

Multicolored painting in art and decorative objects

Polychromy

Polychromy is a technique of multicolored painting in art. It is vividly manifested on sculptures, porcelain objects, wood carvings, and architecture. Unlike monochrome solutions, polychromy enlivens volumes, conveys mood, and enhances detail. In ancient times, Greek and Roman statues were almost always painted, which is why visitors to the Louvre were often surprised by the "brightness" of antiquity when they found traces of pigments.

In painting, an effective multi-layered color palette emphasizes the complexity of composition and depth of intent. In porcelain, German manufactories of the 18th century competed in the refinement of painting: the more shades used, the higher the value in the eyes of collectors. In modernity, polychromy not only decorates but also helps create atmosphere and express ideas through the play of color.
