Tenebrism

Tenebrism is an artistic technique that uses sharp contrasts of light and shadow to create dramatic expression. This style was especially popular in the Baroque era (17th century). Artists like Caravaggio made the background almost black while brightly illuminating only central objects, which enhanced the emotional intensity and three-dimensionality of the images.
This technique drew the viewer's attention to details and heightened narrative tension.
Interestingly, tenebrism was in a sense a revolution—other styles of the time preferred more even lighting.
This method inspired many masters and remains popular in contemporary art, emphasizing emotion and mystery. The main distinction of tenebrism is the artificial creation of a light focus with subsequent plunging of details into darkness. This technique involves a psychological play with the viewer, evoking a strong visual and emotional impression.
