Tempera

The most ancient painting technique using egg yolk

Tempera

Tempera is a painting technique that uses water-based paints, usually mixed with egg yolk. This method was popular since ancient times and reached its peak during the Renaissance. Tempera provides bright colors and dries quickly, allowing for layering and blending of coats. Interestingly, on a painting made with tempera, you can see the finest details, because this technique allows working with various coatings and textures.

However, unlike oil painting, tempera is less resistant to the effects of time and light, which requires the artist to take special care of their works. Tempera has enlivened many masterpieces, including works by the Italian master Sandro Botticelli. It is especially interesting that many contemporary artists are returning to the tempera technique, restoring the forgotten secrets of the old masters.
