RPM (Royal Porzellan-Manufaktur O.H.G.) was founded in the town of Küps (Bavaria) in 1955. Its name was misleading from the start, since it had no connection to any royal family and never actually manufactured products itself. The only accurate part of the name was the designation O.H.G., because the company simply traded attractive decorative porcelain items (fireplace services, vases, etc.) that had been specially marked for it.

Around 1961 Royal Porzellan-Manufaktur opened a small subsidiary shop in the USA on Fifth Avenue in New York. Unable to bridge the growing gap between the styles demanded by American customers and the products supplied by German manufacturers, the subsidiary closed after just three years.

Meanwhile RPM managed to secure a small niche in the German market, supplying small shops with mid- and high-end decorative items. It never became famous or hugely successful, but it did manage to survive what had been an expensive mistake in the US market.

The development of the porcelain market in Germany between 1960 and 1970 is hard to explain. In short, this period saw not only the collapse of the standard mail-order business but also a general shift in product ranges. It was the main phase of the so-called "medieval modern" era, based on a combination of design and ceramics. Typical porcelain items lost much of their market position, and many small porcelain-related companies were forced to close.

This development led R.P.M. to shift market segments, concentrating on inexpensive gifts, souvenirs and promotional items. On January 1, 1973, it merged with a similar firm, Porzellanmanufaktur Klaus Cutik, forming Royal Porzellan (Manufaktur) G.m.b.H., which ceased operations in 1996.
