Here is how the designer describes the inspiration behind the creation of coins in honor of the baptism of Prince George of Cambridge: “The design is done in the Baroque style, which has been revived many times in artworks dedicated to the traditions of British kings. The only element I was to depict on the coin is the Lily Font, kept in the Tower of London, where all newborns of the royal family are traditionally baptized. The angel figures are especially pronounced; I depicted them sitting on the edge of the royal font playing harps. The font is also depicted at the top of the coin in a garland of lilies, done in the same Baroque style. The motto of the coin is traditional and expresses the hopes placed on the baby, born to become king.”
The £5 coins will have a diameter of 38.61 mm. The coins, made of 22-carat gold, will be minted in a limited edition of up to 1,000 pieces, with a total weight of 39.94 g.
