Potale
Imitation of gold or silver leaf in decor and art

Potale is a metal leaf, a substitute for gold or silver leaf, often used in decorative art, framing, iconostases, porcelain and silver items. It should be noted that potale consists of copper or aluminum alloys, so over time it can change color and oxidize, giving the object a special vintage look.
In the 18th century, potale was often used to decorate inexpensive items, passing it off as real gold.
Interestingly, even experienced collectors sometimes confuse potale with real gold leaf, leading to curious appraisals at auctions.
Today, potale is used both for restoration and for creating ultramodern decor: it is easy to apply and looks impressive on relief surfaces. Attention: Potale requires careful handling and protection with special varnishes, otherwise it quickly loses its shine and deteriorates from moisture.
