Floral Ornament

A decorative motif inspired by plant forms

Floral Ornament

Floral ornament is a favorite decorative element on porcelain and silver of the 19th-20th centuries. Elements of leaves, flowers, vine tendrils, presented not literally but as smooth, generalized lines, were used to adorn both tableware and interior objects. The key is recognizable "vegetal" energy, but without illustrative representation.

In porcelain, motifs were often associated with Eastern influences, while in silver they echoed fashionable trends of the era, such as Art Nouveau. Masters varied their approach: either artificially complicating or deliberately simplifying the motif. Sometimes a single element of the ornament became the signature of a manufactory. For example, an amusing case: on a famous English teapot, craftsmen hid a tiny spoon in the ornament — an "Easter egg" for the attentive collector.

This approach allows the ornament to be both a link between eras and a universal language of decoration.
